With the Gold Coast Marathon fast approaching, it is an appropriate time to address your running shoes, whether you’re an experienced runner, returning to running or running for the first time, selecting appropriate footwear for your individual needs is an essential first step. Unfortunately, the ‘one size fits all model’ does not apply to footwear. Every person has different needs and requirements, including gender, weight, running surfaces, and most importantly you’re running mechanics and foot type. There is no one ideal running shoe, nor is there one shoe that is better than all others for every runner.
As a podiatrist the majority of patients I see with foot and leg pain are recreational sports people and those participating in regular exercise as a means of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. A large proportion of these people develop problems as a result of poor foot posture, with the first line of treatment in many cases, when addressing foot and lower limb mechanics, being footwear.
Purchasing the correct running shoe for your foot type is often one of the most important decisions you can make in order to run comfortably and remain injury free. In order to make this sometimes overwhelming choice easier a basic understanding of your foot type is required. There are three basic foot types: pronated, supinated and neutral.
A pronated foot may be described as a ‘flat foot’, they are generally flexible and unstable, requiring support and stability from a shoe. A supinated foot may be described as having a ‘high arch’ and are generally rigid, with little shock absorption, requiring more flexibility and cushioning from a shoe. A neutral foot type depicts a more ideal foot posture somewhere in the mid range, requiring a shoe to follow suit, featuring moderate stability and cushioning.
Armed with your new found knowledge, find a reputable running shoe store, and ensure that your shoe is the correct fit for your foot. Sizing your shoe is critical in order to successfully accommodate the foot within. Take into consideration differences in depth and width of both the heel counter and the forefoot (especially women who generally have a narrower foot), and leave a thumb width from the end of your longest toe to the end of the shoe when you are standing. When choosing your shoe, be prepared to try on a number of different models correlating to your foot type, and always run with the shoe that feels the best, not the shoe that matches your running outfit.
If you are at all uncertain which shoe is appropriate for you, contact Gold Coast Physio & Sports Health for a consultation with Darren Gaffney (Podiatrist). Enjoy your running!
